Weight this morning: 132
Loss: 1.4 pounds
No headache....still! I'm also not irritible or grumpy or overly tired or unmotivated, all of which I was expecting to feel yesterday and/or this morning. Guess all that water and Ibuprofen is really working!
Meal #1: Hot Chocolate at 6:15am. Reallllllly good, too! First I whipped it in my Magic Bullet, then heated it for one minute. Flavor = 10. Best item so far!
I did not drink any water though. Just one cup of coffee with a few tablespoons of half-and-half.
Meal #2: 9:15 am I choked down the Blueberry Oatmeal. Yuck. Flavor rating = 2. It is so heavily "aspartame" flavored, it's like drinking a Diet Coke. Yuck. I did drink 8 oz just before eating the oatmeal, and by the time I finished the oatmeal I had drank another 16 oz.
Total water intake so far: 22 oz

Medifast Day 2
Weight this morning: 133.0
Loss: 0.4 pounds
------------------------
Today was "Fall Back" the clocks....
I woke up at the new 5am and took a couple Ibuprofen as a precautionary measure.
Went back to sleep and got up at 7:30.
I tried to make a pancake for breakfast- to eat as a waffle, but it destroyed itself in my waffle iron and made a heckuva mess- FAIL. Never trying that again. So that was $1.79 down the drain.
Instead, Meal #1 was a Strawberry Shake at 8:15am. Pretty good- but the 'frothy' top has that diet taste. Oh well. Overall flavor I'd rate an 8. I also took a couple more Advil for good measure. I do not want that dreaded headache I hear about.
I drank 12 oz of water afterwards (plus a cup of coffee).
Meal #2 was a Fruit & Nut Crunch Bar. Taste = 9. I really like the bars! I drank another bottle of water while I ate this. This was at 11:30. Also took another round of Advil.
More coffee....
More water....
Meal #3 was at 2:00 and I ate another Chocolate Chip Pancake in muffin form, drizzled with a couple spoonfuls of sugar-free syrup. And drank more water.
Total water intake to this point = 56oz
Meal #4 was around 4:00 and it was banana pudding and I drank another bottle of water.
Water intake = 68 oz
Meal #5 was an actual dinner at 6:00. A big bowl of chopped lettuce, topped with taco seasoned ground elk, a small scoop of refried beans (the label said no suger and the only carbs were fiber, so I figured it had to be OK?) I added a dallop of sour cream and a sprinkling of Tapatio Hot Sauce, mixed it all together and ate it ALL. Yum!
Followed that with another bottle of water = 84 oz total
As for Meal #6....I'm scheduled to have that around 8:00. I don't see the point of eating something just before going to bed. Although all the information that I read says you should still have it to keep your body in balance. Especially because on Medifast you are often consuming less than 1,000 calories per day.
(Follow up note- I did NOT eat that last meal. I wasn't hungry and it was 8:30pm and I was going to bed.)
No headache today- no feeling weird. I'm not irritible or tired or low energy. Everything seems status quo for now?

Medifast Day 1
First off.... at the time I ordered my kit, my weight was creeping up from 133 to 135.
This morning, my weight was is 133.4.
My goal on this program is to get down to 120-123.
I have not yet taken any measurements- I will do that tonight.
Last night I chose my "meals" for the day, in no particular order:
- Cappucino
- Chocolate Chip Pancakes
- Chocolate Shake
- Banana Pudding
- Strawberry Bar
When I got up this morning I mixed the pudding so I could let it set in the fridge for extra thick goodness. I did lick the spoon to taste it- it's allright. At first taste I'd give it an 8.
I'm going to rate the flavor of everything on a scale of 1-10:
1 = REALLY BAD
5 = Neutral (neither good nor bad)
10 = YUMMY!
I decided to have the Cappucino as my first meal, at 8:30 (I managed to sleep in until 8am this morning! Shocker!! I'm normally up at 5:30.)
I mixed it, I heated it, I sipped it. Not very tasty. Definitely has that "diet" or "health food" taste. It reminds me of those International Cafe instant coffee drinks (red and white metal can)....except with a hint of added fiber or something! Ha!
I'd rate the flavor as a 4.
I decided to add a splash of real coffee, that brought it up to a 6. But as I continued to drink it, it just got worse and worse. Seeing as how I'm supposed to "enjoy" each meal over a 15-minute period, this was turning into torture.
I made myself a regular coffee, adding a splash of Torani Sugar-free syrup (Gingerbread flavor) and a splash of Heavy Cream, and in between sips of Cappucino I'd drink a swig of real coffee.
I think my issue is I already dislike anything with the taste of Aspartame, which is going to make this diet especially hard since all the foods contain Aspartame.
I felt a little strange- like I'd had too much caffeine. Which could likely be the case. Also felt like a sugar overload, but I hadn't had any sugar. I mildly wondered if I'd had too much Aspartame?
Meal #2 was on the way to our soccer game at 11:15am. I drank about 8 oz of water before I headed out the door. And for my meal I mixed a Chocolate Shake. Not bad. Reminds me of Carnation Instant Breakfast, but again- it has that 'health food' taste. It was better than the Cappucino. I'd rate it a 6.5. I drank a full bottle of water at the game.
Water intake at this point = 24 oz.
I was hungry after the game and definitely ready for my next meal!
Meal #3 was supposed to be the Chocolate Chip Pancake, which I mixed the packet in a pyrex dish then microwave the whole thing for 1:30 and it basically came out like a muffin that way. I drizzled some syrup on it and put it in a container to take for after the game. Except that the team had a pizza party planned for after the game, so I decided to do my Lean and Green meal then- since Jim wasn't going to be home for dinner and I didn't need to cook. I ate a big salad at 1:30- romaine lettuce with a few leaves of spinach, topped with olives, mushrooms a sprinkling of cheddar cheese and a drizzle of balsamic viniagrette. I added a celery stick, too. Hopefully those were all on my meal plan. The only problem- no Lean to go with my Green. Oopsie. While at the restaurant I downed a giant (24?) oz glass of water.
Water intake at this point = 48 oz
Surprisingly I'm not in the bathroom every 10 minutes!
I stopped at Fred Meyer and loaded up on lettuce, celery, cauliflower, broccoli and asparagus. Also picked up a bottle of sugar-free, calorie-free syrup and a bottle of sugar-free, calorie-free vinaigrette dressing. Oh, and a new container of half-and-half.
This time I was really hungry between meals. Glad I woke up late enough that I can eat every 2-2.5 hours!
Meal #4 was the Pancake Muffin at 3:30. I actually liked it! It's not perfect, but it's good. I'd rate it an 8 and I look forward to eating more of them! More water. I loaded an app to my phone that tracks glasses of water- wants you to drink 12 glasses a day = 96 oz. Works for me!
I drank a bottle of water with the muffin.
Water intake to this point = 64 oz.
I was soooo hungry.
Meal #5 was eaten a little earlier than I probably should have. I ate it at 5:00. Only 1.5 hours after the previous meal. Oopsie. I ate the Strawberry bar which was actually really good. I'd rate it a 9 for flavor. And I am in the bathroom every 10 minutes now. I drank a half bottle of water with the bar.
Water intake at this point: 72 oz.
I'm currently starving! It's only 6:00 and I'm so hungry and I want to wait until 8:00 before I eat my last meal. I referenced my snack list and decided I would eat a stalk of celery, but my Health Coach called me to see how I was doing and suggested a pickle instead. I guess a big side-effect of starting Medifast is the detoxing of your body which results in a huge headache around Day 2 or 3. For some reason adding sodium can help with that, drinking lots of water, and popping Advil or Tylenol as a preventative measure should also help.
I knew days 2 & 3 would be the worst going into this program, that's why I opted to start the program on a Saturday. Sunday is a good day of rest around here....and Monday is a light daycare morning. Tuesday is always my busiest day so hopefully things will be better by then!
Anyway.... I ate 1 pickle, drank the other 1/2 bottle of water making my water intake 80 oz. He said since I missed my protein (Lean) when I ate my Green earlier today that it wouldn't be a bad thing if I ate that now. So I fried up an egg. Not very Lean, I know!
I figure this diet runs very similarly to the Atkins diet, in that you are eating no-sugar and very low-carb foods to put your body in a state of ketosis. An egg will not throw that out of balance.
The egg and pickle satiated me enough that I didn't want to eat that 6th meal. At 8:00 I made myself eat it- I had chosen the Banana Pudding and it was probably the best thing I ate all day! I'd rate it a 9 once you get past the texture issue. =o)
Overall, today I'd give the program an 8. It was relatively easy to follow. The food was decent. Although I was hungry it wasn't THAT bad, especially knowing that another meal is just 2 hours away.
I stopped drinking water about 7pm for fear of having to wake during the night to use the bathroom.
And I took Ibuprofen and Advil before bed.
Tomorrow should be interesting!

My weight story and choosing Medifast
116…142…123…178…134…128…133…140
What do all those numbers mean?
They are my weight over the past 20 years. Yes, I’m putting it all out there for the general public to see.
I’m 5’4″. Exactly. As a high-schooler I weighed 116 pounds. I wore size 4/5.
At ages 18 and 19 I worked at Dairy Queen and that second year there I had the perk of free meals….and every day for lunch I had a Triple Cheese and Bacon Burger, onion rings, soda, and usually a blizzard or sundae. Just the thought of eating that much now makes me want to gag! I was still a size 4/5.
For my early adult life (ages 18-21) I maintained around 120 pounds. Still a size 4/5.
At age 21 I got a desk job. Over the next two years I slowly gained weight. I really didn’t notice it too much because I loved clothes shopping and I would buy new outfits almost weekly. My size went from a 4 to a 6 to an 8 to a 10 and at my peak I was starting to wear size 12. I didn’t see it as a problem until one unseasonably warm late-winter day when I went to pull on my size 10 shorts and I couldn’t get them up my thighs. I refused to buy shorts the next size up. I weighed 142 pounds when I finally got on a scale. I was 23 years old.
According to weight charts, I should have been 125 pounds. “Healthy” is between 111-146 pounds. So although I wasn’t “overweight” by any medical charts, I was overweight by my standards and knew I had to do something.
At that very moment, I cut out my morning snack (which was usually a muffin out of the lunchroom vending machine). Breakfast was a cheese stick (quick and easy, protein based). Jim and I went to lunch together every day- it was either a Burger King Whopper Jr without mayo and without cheese (290 calories, 12 grams of fat….no fries or soda and only $0.99) OR if I went home for lunch it was a grilled cheese sandwich with no butter, and fat-free american cheese. Water to drink. Dinner was normal- not an oversized portion, and I never ate past 7pm. However, I did limit myself to no more than 30 grams of fat per day….hopefully closer to 20 grams. AS a result of my dietary changes, without exercise, I lost 18 pounds.
I maintained at 120-123 for nearly two years….with zero difficulty. I had stopped counting calories and fat after the first couple months and was just eating small quantities of whatever I wanted, still trying to keep my diet low-fat. I was a size 2-4 and happy!
My first pregnancy in 1999- I gained 55 pounds. YIKES.
I lost most of it after the baby was born, but never those “last 10 pounds”. I was able to maintain 134 for years….even after two more pregnancies. 134 was my new normal.
I was OK with that. It makes me a size 6. I could still wear a bikini and not feel bad about myself. I was eating normal breakfasts and normal lunches and dinners. I was not working out, not watching what I ate. A coke every day. Coffee with International Delights creamer every day. Life is good! I knew with some effort I could get back down, but I really didn’t have any desire to do that. I was happy.
Another turning point. In 2007, at age 34, we had no living room- no tv, no couch to sit on. We were doing some remodeling on our house so every awake moment was spent doing something- always moving, never sedentary. No change in my eating habits, although I was drinking a lot more water. My weight started dropping. I was 128. For my height, that is between a size 2 and 4. At Old Navy, at least!! I loved how thin I felt and loaded up on new clothing. It was fabulous! I felt so good about myself, I felt pretty, I felt sexy. It was amazing!
Then winter hit. I gained my typical 5 pound winter gain which put me at 133. Not bad. That was my “normal” remember? I didn’t lose it. I didn’t care. I maintained that weight through all of 2008.
But then the same thing happened the next winter- another 5 pound weight gain. Now I'm weighing 138. When Spring arrived I managed to lose it and get back to my 133. I still wore a bikini in Mexico that summer (2009). I probably would have looked better in it if I weighed 128, but I was OK at 133.
The following winter- another 5 pound gain. And it wasn't going away. This was 2010. I started running/walking/elliptical-ing 4 days a week- and kept doing it for nearly a year. I watched what I ate, I worked out, but my weight would never go down below 133. "Normal" was 135.
I stopped exercising in March 2011. Oddly, my weight stayed at 135.
I realize that 135 might not sound like a lot. I realize that wearing size 6 or 8 sounds good to most people. But on my frame, 10 pounds makes a tremendous difference. I have several pairs of jeans that don't fit as well as they should and when you spend $100 on a pair of jeans, it's extra motivation to make them fit. I need to get back to size 4.
I have 5 bikinis in my closet that I want to be able to wear.
According to the medical charts…for my age and frame, my ideal weight is 128.
I know I can do it. And if it takes something drastic like Medifast to make it work, I'll do it. I lost 18 pounds before and kept it off for a looooooooooong time. I have no doubts that I can do it again. Sure, I'm older- my body is flabbier, my metabolism is slower. But if I can get down to 120 and wean myself off the diet to maintain 125-128, I will be the happiest girl in the world.
And as embarassing as this is, I'm going to post my "before" pictures. I also took some bikini pictures, but this "muffin top over the jeans" is good enough for now:
Stay tuned!
